Do the Duke!

on .

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award, bringing together practical experiences and life skills to create committed global citizens and equip young people for life. Our program challenges young Canadians to develop skills and tools to improve themselves and respond to the needs of their communities. We encourage them to go beyond their comfort zone and ignite a feeling of self-confidence in themselves. We champion these youth as they take ownership of their present and future by expanding their skill sets and testing their limits. Our unique program is designed to help them discover that they are more capable and powerful than they dreamed.  If this sounds interesting to you, please send us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. One Book, One Province Project

on .

Courtesy of Saskatchewan Libraries Association:

In March, 2018, the Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) will embark on the second One Book, One Province project, following on the heels of the successful adoption of The Education of Augie Merasty: A Residential School Memoir for 2017.

The One Book, One Province project is a province-wide reading initiative that encourages Saskatchewan residents to read, discuss, and engage in programs around our selected title. One Book, One Province brings Saskatchewan residents together to create community around reading and libraries, and prompt discussions on the multicultural history of Saskatchewan.

Out of Old Saskatchewan Kitchens written by Amy Jo Ehman and published by MacIntyre Purcell has been chosen as the 2018 selection. Filled with captivating accounts of homesteading and settlement history, archival photos and stories of many cultures--Métis, German, Ukrainian and Scandinavian--are told as we see the history of Saskatchewan from the dinner table.

Amy Jo Ehman describes traditional ethnic foods and relates these to the incredible diversity of Saskatchewan, and in the process provides us with time-worn recipes for many of these dishes.

-Alan Anderson, author of Settling Saskatchewan

The essence of the project is to encourage Saskatchewan people to read the same book during the month of March, 2018. The overarching theme guiding the book selection is Tolerance and Understanding, and in adopting this single title as our focus, one of our goals is to encourage Saskatchewan readers to explore their culture, ethnicity and heritage through their multicultural roots as it is manifested in the foods we eat.

SLA would like to invite you, as a cultural organization in this province, to participate. Participation could include forming a book club or discussion group, mounting a display, creating responsive artwork, or any project that invites discussion about the book. While SLA cannot provide funding to assist with your project, we will acknowledge your organization on our website using your logo and by promoting your project through our communication channels including social media and a monthly newsletter that reaches over 1500 people and organizations.
